Keep Moving Week 17 (Part 1)

Three seperate trips underground in Naples; we did the Catacombs of San Gennaro and San Gaudioso and the Underground tour.  All very different, San Gaudioso has a gallery where desiccated heads are attached to the walls with portraits frescoed around them and a Frankenstein skeleton where every bone belonged to a different person.  San Gennaro was larger and more impressive and comes with the history of San Gennaro's "Miracle of the Blood" - three times a year an ampule of the Saints blood is brought out to see if it will liquify, more often than not it does.  When it doesn't it is a warning sign of disasters to come - Covid pandemic, severe earthquake, World War 2 and the last erruption of Vesuvius in 1944.  The Underground Naples tour takes you forty metres down in to the Greek aqueducts and tells you how they were used to save lives as shelters in World War 2.  Some very narrow dark tunnels to navigate, you wouldn't want to have indulged in too many pizzas or Tiramisu!
